El Bierzo is a region in Castile and Leon, situated in the north-west of the province of Leon and covering a surface area of 2,759 km².

To the north it borders with the Community of Asturias and to the west with

the Community of Galicia (Ourense and Lugo).
This strategic situation, one step away from both Galicia and Asturias, has favoured the settlement of many civilisations, such as the Romans, Templars, Celts, etc.

The geographic condition peculiar to the area, surrounded by mountains, helps create a microclimate and an ideal situation to grow natural products. This fact is what has made El Bierzo famous for its excellent D.O. wines, its fruit and vegetables and its tasty sausages.

The Road to Santiago (a worldwide reference point for Christian pilgrimage together with Rome and Jerusalem) crosses El Bierzo, acting as a backbone for all the villages and towns that have been built around it. This fact has marked the character and the culture of the people from El Bierzo for centuries.
